What Clients Say About Life At the Bar

"It's only seven months later, and I feel like I made several years' worth of progress in my professional life."

Everything, really [is better as a result of the coaching work].  I'm much more empowered, and more willing to work through situations proactively rather than just reacting (and overreacting).  I'm more careful to consider the communication styles of the people I encounter every day, and pay closer attention to the way I interact with others.  My biggest goal was to get in a different job-- but to pay attention not just to what I was running from, but also to where I wanted to go.  I did not accept the first thing that came to me, but waited until I'd really considered what I wanted to accomplish.  Now I'm practicing in an area that I'm really passionate about, and I'm really a completely different person than I was even 6 months ago.

You are a wonderful active listener.  You always prompted me to delve further into my statements, even when I didn't really want to.  You also were excellent about guiding me through an agenda -- otherwise, especially in the beginning, I think I would have fallen into the tendency I'd adopted with everyone else, which was to just rant about my situation with no real strategy or end product.  Your guidance kept me on task and added accountability.

A.B., third year associate.

"I had tremendous skepticism regarding the usefulness of the program prior to starting, but she proved me wrong."

I'd have to say it has been an excellent experience working with Julie thus far.  Although we are only a few sessions into the coaching, it has had a tremendous impact on my attitude toward my firm, my career, and on my life in general.

Before working with Julie, I was very unhappy with my firm (to the point where I was second-guessing my career choice) and distressed at how my job was affecting my personal life.  I'm not going to say that she's miraculously fixed all of my problems, but through our coaching I have received practical tools that have allowed me to examine and address the roots of my issues at work and in my personal life.

With her help, I have been able to pinpoint specific steps to improve my productivity and general mindset about work, address roadblocks to my happiness and success, and assess as well as establish various goals in my life.  Although the stresses of law firm life are still omnipresent, I am better equipped to minimize and deal with them.  And though I may end up leaving the firm I am currently with, at least I can be happy while I am here.

My advice for those considering working with Julie is: if you are unsure where to go or how to improve on the area of life you find yourself in, she will likely offer you some tremendous tips on helping you get yourself where you want to be.

"I found her coaching style to be helpful from our first conversation."

As an associate attorney who was unhappy in my current job but didn't have a clear idea of how best to make a switch, I contacted Julie Fleming-Brown to get an outside perspective on how to make a "smart" career move.

By asking thought-provoking questions and sharing insights, Julie helped me to clarify my thoughts about what success and happiness at work would look like for me and what steps I could take to make that vision a reality.  Within the first few coaching sessions, I had decided on a plan to leave my current job, and as I went through that process, Julie's insights into time and stress management have been invaluable.

Once I decided that the right move for me was to start my own small business, Julie helped me overcome my anxieties about leaving the traditional practice of law to pursue work that brings me greater satisfaction.  As the process evolves, Julie has given me some wonderful tools for my professional toolbox, helping me to prioritize, set goals, and plan on both the day-to-day level and the career level.

Although goals like "excellence", "happiness", and "professionalism" sound vague and theoretical, Julie takes a thoroughly pragmatic approach, uncovering the concrete steps that can be taken immediately to improve my career.

I would advise anyone who is contemplating a career shift or who feels they could get more out of their professional and personal time to have a consultation with Julie.
